Crandon is a city in Forest County, Wisconsin, United States; it is in the northeastern part of the state, about 100 miles (160 km) north of Green Bay. The population was 1,961 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Forest County and is the only incorporated town in the county. The city is located adjacent to the Town of Crandon.

Forest County and the town of Crandon were started in 1887 and named after Frank P. Crandon, the tax commissioner of the Chicago and North Western Railway. Since then logging, tourism and light industry have been the staple of the economy.

Crandon is well known for its outdoor recreation opportunities including fishing, hunting and snowmobiling with many lakes and hundreds of miles of trails. Crandon is also home of The Crandon International Off-Road Raceway.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.0 km² (6.2 mi²). 13.5 km² (5.2 mi²) of it is land and 2.5 km² (0.9 mi²) of it (15.40%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 1,961 people, 803 households, and 489 families residing in the city. The population density was 145.0/km² (375.8/mi²). There were 961 housing units at an average density of 71.1/km² (184.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 91.18% White, 0.25% Black or African American, 7.04% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.05% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. 0.92% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 803 households out of which 32.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.1% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.1% were non-families. 36.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 82.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $27,125, and the median income for a family was $35,260. Males had a median income of $27,763 versus $20,227 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,757. About 10.5% of families and 14.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.1% of those under age 18 and 10.8% of those age 65 or over.
