Vitaliy Gulyaev (May 26, 1978 - July 23, 2022) Ukrainian colonel, commander of the 28th separate mechanized brigade named after the Knights of the Winter Campaign (2021-2022). Before that, he was the chief of staff of the 28th OMBr, commander of the 13th OMPB (2018-2019). Participant of the Russian-Ukrainian war: since the beginning of the war in eastern Ukraine in 2014, he participated in combat operations, died during the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Knight of the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky III degree (2022, posthumously).

Biography

Gulyaev was born in 1978 in the city of Shostka, Sumy Oblast.

Since 1995, he served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.[1]

With the beginning of the war in eastern Ukraine in 2014, he was at the front.[2]

As of 2018, Vitaliy Gulyaev, with the rank of lieutenant colonel, headed the 13th separate motorized infantry battalion from the 58th OMPBr of the operational command "North".[3]

In April 2019, in Shostka, on the occasion of the celebration of the 5th anniversary of the creation of the 13th separate motorized infantry battalion, lieutenant colonel Vitaly Gulyaev congratulated the personnel and presented certificates, commemorative badges of the motorized infantry battalion and other military ranks. On May 8, 2019, on the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation in Shostka, he presented veterans of the war against Russian aggression with honorary badges of the battalion.[4][5]

Later, Vitaliy Gulyaev served in the 93rd OMBr. Later, he held the position of chief of staff of the 28th OMBr, and in September 2021 he was appointed commander of the 28th brigade[2]Received a master's degree from Taras Shevchenko Luhansk National University in Starobilsk[6]Was awarded the "Cold Ravine" award.[7]

Since February 2022, with the beginning of the Russian military invasion of Ukraine, Vitaly Gulyaev at the head of the 28th OMBr was on the front line, stopping the advance of Russian troops in the south of Ukraine.

An officer died on July 23, 2022 on the outskirts of Mykolaiv as a result of a rocket attack on a command post.[8][9]

Farewell to the deceased Vitaly Gulyaev took place on July 26, 2022 at the Odessa Military Academy, during which those present also said goodbye to three lieutenant colonels Oleksandr Deinek, Valentin Sergiyenko and Vitaly Bondarev, who died on July 23 together with the commander. The mourning ceremony in Odesa was attended by the first persons of the city and the region, the commander of the operational command "South" Major General Andriy Kovalchuk, the fifth president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, ex-acting of the President of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov and others.[10]

Awards

Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky III degree (August 4, 2022, posthumously) — for personal courage and selfless actions shown in the defense of the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, loyalty to the military oath.[11]

Commemoration

On August 4, 2022, at a session of the Kuyalnyk United Territorial Community, a decision was made to rename Miska Street in the village of Kuyalnyk to Vitaliya Gulyaeva Street. The street received a new name in honor of the commander of the 28th separate mechanized brigade. 21 deputies voted for the idea of perpetuating the memory of Colonel Gulyaev, the decision was adopted unanimously.[12][13]

On August 9, 2022, the press service of the Yuzhne City Council reported that a public discussion had begun on renaming streets in two settlements after Vitaliy Gulyaev. They plan to rename Zhovtneva Street in Novi Bilyari and Tsvetaeva Street in Sychavtsi village of Odesa Region.[14]

On August 18, 2022, the street and alley of Vitaliy Gulyaev appeared in the city of Berezivka, Odesa region.[15]
