Barbara Horwitz

Dr. Barbara Horwitz is a physiologist whose work focuses on metabolism. In particular, her research has centered on the neural and hormonal regulation of energy balance.

In 1972, Dr. Horwitz joined the UC Davis as an Assistant Professor. She [has been recognized by numerous campus and national awards for her scholarship, her teaching, and her mentoring, and she is an elected Fellow of the AAAS and of the American Physiological Society.][1]

Education and early life

[Barbara Horwitz completed her Ph.D. in physiology at Emory University in 1966 after graduating with a B.S. in biology with highest honors (1961) and an M.S. in biology (1962) from the University of Florida. She then traveled west to UCLA where she began a postdoctoral fellowship in physiology. In 1968 she was appointed Assistant Research Physiologist at UC Davis; in 1972 she joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor; and in 1978 she was promoted to Professor. She became Chair of the Department of Animal Physiology in the Division of Biological Sciences in 1991, and after this department morphed into the Section of Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior, she served as its first Chair (1993-1998).][2]

Research

Dr. Barbara Horwitz and her lab has investigated the physiological mechanisms such as the [mechanisms underlying adrenergic regulation of energy expenditure; the role of mitochondrial uncoupling proteins in energy balance, oxidative stress, and neuroprotection; and mechanisms in mammalian hibernators providing neuroprotection and survival in extreme environments.][1] She has published 232 research papers in these topics and related subjects.[3]

Major services to the scientific community

Barbara Horwitz is the co-director of the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) Program at UC Davis which supports underrepresented minority graduate students pursuing Ph.D.'s in the biomedical and behavioral sciences.[4] This program, funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH),[5] serves to create a more diverse pool of emerging scientists and helps underrepresented minority graduate students develop the professional skills necessary to successfully enter their respective fields.[6] Barbara Hor
