  • Comment: Thank you for the disclosure. The organization appears notable but there are a few issues that need addressed prior to moving to mainspace. Mainly, the draft is too overly detailed about the programs offered. It is basically a brochure for the organization and promotional in tone. Think of what readers want to see in an encyclopedia, not what Year Up wants to see on its Wikipedia page. If you are able to clean that up and just give a basic overview of its programs we will be closer. You can ping me or leave a message on my talk page when complete and I will come back to review. This draft is based on major press coverage of Year Up, especially over the last decade. The organization and its programs have been covered by The New York Times, CNBC, and CBS News' 60 Minutes and has been the subject of studies by academics and the Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation in the US Department of Health and Human Services. While the organization has a lot of minor news coverage, especially pieces about its students' success stories, I've focused on major outlets that provide significant coverage of Year Up and its programs, per the recommendations here. Year Up is an American nonprofit organization focused on education and job skills. The organization provides students without a 4- year bachelor’s degree with resources, training and corporate internships with the aim of improving their job prospects and social mobility.

History

The organization was founded in Boston in 2000 by Gerald Chertavian,[3] who worked as a banker on Wall Street and later co-founded a software company.[4] Chertavian participated in the Big Brother program and helped his "little brother" gain a college education. He wanted to find a way to help others with similar backgrounds access education and career opportunities that they might otherwise not be aware of or have the support to apply for.[5]

In June 2002, Year Up's first class of students graduated its one-year program.[6] The program had started in Boston in 2001 with 22 students,[5] seventy percent of whom were from the Greater Boston area. Fourteen of the participants received job offers for roles with average salaries of $35,000 per year.[6]

The organization expanded to Providence, Rhode Island in 2005 and added programs in Washington, D.C. and New York City in 2006, in addition to its operations in Boston and Cambridge.[5] As of 2006, the number of students graduating the program each year increased to 204 and it had a total of 800 alumni.[5]

In 2011, Year Up established a Puget Sound program, based in downtown Seattle.[3] It opened a program in Phoenix in 2014.[7]

By 2016, the organization trained around 3,000 students per year.[4] The program was available in 26 cities across the US by 2019.[7]

As of 2022, approximately 4,000 students per year participated in Year Up's programs.[2]

Programs

Year Up's program includes job skills training and internships in a corporate environment.[8] Initial areas of internship included customer service, IT, financial operations, project management or quality assurance. During the program, students receive a stipend and earn college credits.[4] The training courses focus on business skills such as project management or sales,[2] as well as technical skills relating to their internships,[4] such as data analytics or software development.[9] The program also provides training in soft skills needed in corporate roles, such as social skills and networking.[2][4]

The Year Up program accepts underserved students who are aged between 18 and 29 and have a high school diploma or equivalent qualification.[2] As of 2022, three quarters of program participants are Black or Latino and its graduation rate was 70%.[2]

The participants sign a contract agreeing to meet specific expectations for them during the program, including punctuality, wearing work-appropriate clothing, writing notes to guest speakers, and not using bad language.[3][10][11]

The organization also runs a program providing materials and resources to other training providers working with students, including community colleges. The program, called Career Accelerator, had been launched in Boston, Charlotte, N.C., Dallas and Los Angeles by November 2022.[12]

Evaluation of program

A 2011 evaluation of the Year Up program by the Economic Mobility Corporation found that the year after completing the program, Year Up alumni participating in the study had 30% higher annual earnings on average than the control group. Program graduates working in areas other than investment operations or information technology did not have significantly different income compared with the control group.[13]

In 2021, the Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation in the US Department of Health and Human Services (OPRE) published a report of a study it had sponsored, evaluating Year Up's longer term impact via a five-year randomized controlled trial. The study found that the Year Up program had a statistically significant impact on earnings, with Year Up alumni receiving quarterly incomes 38% greater than the quarterly incomes for a control group in the most recent quarter prior to the study. According to the study's findings, the program did not have a measurable impact on college enrollment, and a slightly higher number of the control group went on to earn an associate degree or higher. The study found that over three years, there was reduced debt and financial hardship for program alumni, and lower receipt of public benefits, however there was not an increase in average household income. The report suggested this may be due to reduced eligibility for benefits from increased earnings or that the higher earnings enabled participants to move out from their family household. The study estimated that the financial impact on society was a net gain of $15,349 per student, or a gain to society of $1.66 for $1.00 spent on the program.[8]

In 2022, the OPRE reported that six years after completing the Year Up program, past participants had an income 30% higher than a control group of non-participants.[2] Graduates of the program had an average starting salary of $48,000 in 2022.[2]

Funding and partnerships

The majority of funding for Year Up is provided by its corporate partners,[8] who paid Year Up $27,700 per intern as of 2016. This funds the stipend paid to each Year Up participant and pays for their college credits, as well as contributing to Year Up's organizational costs.[4] As of 2016, the organization worked with 250 companies that provided funding for the program and took on interns. Companies who have partnered with the organization include American Express, AT&T, Comcast, Facebook, Google, JPMorgan Chase, Macy’s, Novartis and Twitter.[4]

In 2022, Google announced it was working with Year Up and two other job training programs to provide funding and course content. From a $100 million fund, Google provides grants to Year Up to train participants in Google software using materials from the company's certification programs.[9] Also in 2022, Year Up received a grant of $3 million from the private equity firm Blackstone Inc. to expand its Career Accelerator program.[12]
