Razaq Obe (born February 17, 1976) is a Nigerian technocrat and public servant. He currently serves as the Commissioner for Energy and Mines in Ondo State.^[1] With over 15 years of corporate experience in renowned companies such as Globacom, NNPC, and Exxon Mobil (Upstream Nigeria), Obe has established himself as a prominent figure in the energy sector.

Early Life and Education

Razaq Obe hails from Ilara-Mokin in the Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State. He attended the University of Benin from 1998 to 2003, where he pursued a degree in Petroleum Engineering. During his time at the university, Obe actively participated in campus politics and led several movements against the imposition of unfavorable conditions that hindered students' welfare and academic pursuits. He served as the president of the Nigerian University Engineering Students Association (NUESA) and held positions in the student's union parliament and the university Congress of the Masses. In 2012, he furthered his education at the University of Liverpool, obtaining an MSc in Oil and Gas Project Management. Additionally, Obe completed the Accredited Mediator program at the London School of Mediation in 2019.

Career

Obe's professional journey encompasses a decade-long tenure in esteemed organizations. He began his career in 2007 as a Management Executive at Globacom, a prominent Nigerian telecommunications company.^[2] Subsequently, he completed his mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with the Nigerian Gas Company in Warri, a subsidiary of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Obe's competence and expertise led him to join Exxon Mobil (Upstream Nigeria), where he held the position of Operations Procurement Contract Manager until his recent retirement. During his time at Exxon Mobil, he was appointed as a board member of the ExxonMobil Employees Savings and Pensions Funds, contributing to the management and oversight of the fund.^[3]

Obe's contributions extend beyond his corporate endeavors. He served as the Chairman of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and acted as a board member for the N350B ExxonMobil ESP and Pension Funds.^[4] Furthermore, he played an instrumental role as a member of the Ministerial Committee on Contract Staffing in the Nigerian oil and gas industry. The committee, chaired by the Nigerian Minister of State for Labor and Productivity, aimed to address pertinent issues within the sector.

Politics

Recognizing his extensive experience and valuable insights, Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN, appointed Razaq Obe as the Commissioner for Energy and Mines in 2020.^[5] In this role, Obe is responsible for overseeing the energy and mining sectors, contributing to the development and strategic planning of these industries within Ondo State.^[6]

Outside of his professional commitments, Razaq Obe values community engagement and social development. Razaq Obe's contributions to the energy sector and his commitment to public service have positioned him as a respected figure in Nigeria.
