Ecomare
Ecomare is Texel National Park’s natural history museum. It includes a public aquarium and operates as a seal and bird sanctuary. Located in the Island of Texel, Netherlands, it was built in 1930 and had a seal animal shelter added in 1952. It is visited by over 265,000 people a year and is the largest center for nature information in the Wadden Sea.[1] Ecomare’s stated mission is to improve its visitors’ relationship with coastal and maritime environments, to increase awareness about the fragility of natural resources, and to encourage people to protect them.[2]
Saved Animals
In October 2020, an albino seal suffering from a lungworm infection was treated and released back to the wild three months later.[3]
In December 2020, the center saved a tropical sunfish that got lost on its way south and needed to recuperate from being in waters that were too cold for its health.[4]
In March 2023, an animal caretaker at the museum found a sea lamprey, a parasitic fish uncommon to the Netherlands. The museum said it would preserve the fish and give it away to a different museum.[5]
