Abdullah Al-Othaim Markets Company is a Saudi Arabia–based joint stock company, currently operating in Saudi Arabia and Egypt. It is the subsidiary of Sheikh Saleh Ali Al Othaim Organization, which was founded in 1956. Its main activities are food wholesaling, grocery stores, and malls.[4][5]
With a presence in over 100 regions and cities, the company has achieved a vast geographical spread throughout the Kingdom. It has a high number of branches, with more than 323 branches inside the Kingdom till 2023, in addition to its spread outside the Kingdom, with 46 branches in the Arab Republic of Egypt.[6][7][8]
Forbes ranked the company third in the Arab World for retail executive management in 2016.[9] It also ranked the company in the top 100 companies in Saudi Arabian, and the top 200 companies in the Arab World.[10] In 2020, Forbes Middle-East listed the company was one of the 100 largest public companies in the Middle-East.[11]
History
1956 to 1980
In 1956 Al-Othaim Trading was established in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia by Sheikh Saleh Ali Al-Othaim. The foundation of Abdullah Al-Othaim Markets Company in 1980, which expanded commercial activities by building branches to sell wholesale and retail commodities.[12][13]
From 1981 to 2000
In 1990, Abdullah Al-Othaim Markets Company opened Store No. 14 and implemented the "Consumer Protection" method, making it one of the top markets in this industry. In 1992, The company's central warehouses with its quality requirements in dry and refrigerated storage were opened. The foundation of Al-Othaim Academy for Training and Development in the year 2000, with a total of 95,000 trainees to date.[14]
From 2001 to 2010
The "Iktissab" loyalty system was launched in 2004, and it is now one of the major loyalty networks in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In 2007, the initiative of leaving halal donation from customers during store transactions to help official charities was launched.[15]
By 2008, Abdullah Al-Othaim Markets had completed the transformation from a private company to a publicly listed company in Saudi Stock Exchange “Tadawul”.[16][17]
From 2011 to 2023
In 2016, the first Othaim Markets outlets opened in Egypt where the Othaim Markets management decided to establish commercial chains to sell foodstuffs. With an initial amount of 144 million riyals, the first 15 branches were opened in 2016, as part of the expansion plan to establish chains under the name “Al-Othaim” in the Egyptian market. The launch of shop No. 300 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2022.[18][19]
