Politico Nazi article controversy

On October 2, 2023 Giles published an opinion piece on the Politico website defending individuals who joined the Waffen SS in WWII.[5]

Giles reached notability in early October 2023 when he argued that being a member of the Waffen-SS didn't necessarily make somebody a Nazi, in response to the controversy surrounding the House of Commons of Canada's standing ovation for Ukrainian-Canadian World War II veteran of the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Galician) Yaroslav Hunka.[6] In the article Giles writes of Hunka's unit, "Repeated exhaustive investigations ... led to the conclusion that no war crimes or atrocities had been committed by this particular unit," effectively whitewashing the SS Galichina subunits' involvement in the Huta Pieniacka massacre of Polish civilians.[7]
