The Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals (BHDDH) has a long history of serving the Rhode Island community dating back to 1828. In 1994, Zambarano Memorial Hospital, the Institute of Mental Health and the Center General Hospital merged and became the Eleanor Slater Hospital. Services were expanded to include patients in need of long-term hospital level care.

About Us

Eleanor Slater Hospital (ESH) is both a Critical Care Hospital (formerly known as Long Term Acute Care Hospitals (LTACH)) that provides specialized care for patients who need a longer stay in the hospital than a traditional acute care facility can provide and a state psychiatric facility. Our team of experienced doctors, nurses, and therapists is dedicated to providing you with the highest quality care possible, whether you have complex post-acute medical needs or require longer term inpatient psychiatric care.

ESH understands that being in a hospital can be a difficult experience, and we want to make your stay as comfortable and as easy as possible. We offer a variety of services to help you recover and get back to your life, whether you are facing the challenges of complex post-acute medical recovery or longer term psychiatric treatment.

Eleanor Slater Hospital also has a dedicated social work team that can help you with discharge planning and other needs.

Our Services

Eleanor Slater Hospital understands critical care hospital patients require specialized care that can be difficult to find in a traditional acute care setting. This is why Eleanor Slater Hospital (ESH) offers specialized programs for these patients. ESH also understands not all episodes of acute psychiatric illness respond to treatment in the standard length of acute hospitalizations.

ESH has a team of specialized healthcare services who are experienced in caring for medically complex patients and those with severe and persistent mental illness. ESH's team of medical specialties include:

· Psychiatry

· Infectious Disease

These specialty services are supported by highly trained registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, clinical social workers, and registered dieticians. We offer 24 hour on-site physician, registered nurses, and respiratory therapy services.

ESH's services also include a discharge planning process that is designed to help patients transition back to their homes or other long-term care settings. This process may include home health care, case management, and education for patients and families.

ESH's goal is to help medically complex and/or treatment resistance psychiatric patients recover and return home as soon as possible. ESH's programs also aim to provide patients and families with the support and education they need to understand and manage a loved one’s condition at home.

If you or a loved one is a medically complex patient and/or patient with an episode of severe mental illness that is not responding to treatment in an acute hospitalization, you should talk to your doctor about whether our specialized program is right for you. These programs can provide the specialized care and support that you need to recover and return home.

Neurological Services

Eleanor Slater Hospital understand the unique challenges involved in treated neurological disorders.  Eleanor Slater Hospital can provide specialized care for patients with neurological disorders ranging from stroke and traumatic brain injury to multiple sclerosis, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

The specific care that a patient receives will depend on their individual needs and the severity of their disorder. However, some common treatments that are offered at Eleanor Slater Hospitals include:

•              Rehabilitation therapy: This is a program of exercise, education, and counseling that helps patients improve their physical and cognitive function after a neurological injury or illness. Rehabilitation therapy may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and cognitive therapy.

•              Pain management: This program helps patients manage pain caused by a neurological disorder. Pain management may include medications, injections, and other therapies.

•              Nutritional support: This program helps patients meet their nutritional needs if they are unable to eat or drink enough on their own. Nutritional support may include tube feeding or parenteral nutrition (TPN).

•              Wound care: This program helps patients manage wounds that are caused by a neurological disorder. Wound care may include debridement, dressings, and other therapies.

Ventilator Weaning & Management – Complex Respiratory

Eleanor Slater Hospital (ESH) offer a wide range of services for complex respiratory patients. These services may include:

•              Ventilator support: ESH is equipped to provide ventilator support to adult patients with a variety of respiratory conditions. ESH’s staff are highly trained in ventilator management and weaning.

•              Tracheostomy care: ESH also provide cares for patients with tracheostomies. This includes cleaning and maintaining the tracheostomy tube, as well as teaching patients and their caregivers how to care for the tracheostomy at home.

•              Respiratory therapy: ESH has respiratory therapists on staff who can provide a variety of treatments to help patients improve their breathing, including:

o             Oxygen therapy

o             Nebulized medications

o             Chest physiotherapy

o             Pulmonary rehabilitation

ESH can be a valuable resource for complex respiratory patients. They provide the specialized care and support that these patients need to recover and improve their quality of life.

Here are some examples of complex respiratory conditions that may be treated in an Eleanor Slater Hospital:

ESH has access to the latest wound care technologies and treatments, and they can provide a wide range of wound care services, including:

•              Wound assessment: ESH wound care specialists will thoroughly assess your wound to determine its type, severity, and underlying cause. This information will be used to develop a personalized treatment plan.

•              Wound debridement: ESH wound care specialists can perform a variety of debridement techniques to remove dead, damaged, and infected tissue from your wound. This helps to create a clean and healthy wound bed that is more likely to heal.

•              Wound dressings: ESH wound care specialists will select the appropriate wound dressing for your wound based on its type, severity, and stage of healing. They will also teach you how to care for your wound at home.

Acute Rehab:

Acute rehabilitation offered at Eleanor Slater Hospital (ESH) is a specialized program designed to help patients who have recently been discharged from a hospital but still need intensive rehabilitation services to regain their strength and function. ESH provides acute rehabilitation services to patients who have had a stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, or other serious illness or injury.

The goal of acute rehabilitation at ESH is to help patients achieve their maximum level of independence and function so that they can return home or to the community as safely as possible. ESH offers a variety of rehabilitation services, including:

•              Physical therapy: Physical therapists can help patients improve their strength, mobility, and coordination.

•              Occupational therapy: Occupational therapists can help patients improve their ability to perform activities of daily living, such as dressing, bathing, and eating.

•              Speech therapy: Speech therapists can help patients who have difficulty speaking, swallowing, or communicating.

•              Respiratory therapy: Respiratory therapists can help patients improve their breathing and manage respiratory conditions.

Psychiatric Services:

Psychiatric admissions at Eleanor Slater Hospital is designed for patients with severe mental illness who have been treatment refractory at the acute care level and duration of care. The acute care setting can be very beneficial to most patients suffering from a severe initial presentation or period of exacerbation of a severe mental illness, however, from time to time some patients will require more time in a longer-term setting designed for those who do no respond quickly or to standard interventions. ESH offers complex medication management, integrated psychological testing and therapies, a variety of rehabilitation and recreational enrichment, as well as comprehensive case management and discharge planning to help these patients with complex needs life better and fuller lives.

Some examples of conditions that we are able to serve well:

· Treatment resistant and clozapine resistant schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder

· Prolonged, unremitting treatment resistant manic, mixed, and depressive episodes associated with either bipolar disorder or major depressive disorder

· Dementias with severe mood episodes and/or severe behavioral disturbance that is failing to respond to treatment
