Lupinus vallicola, also known as Vallery Lupine, Bluebonnet Lupine, and Texas Lupine,[1] is a flowering plant in the genus, Lupinus.[2]
Description
Lupinus vallicola has violet flowers that are typically 2cm in diameter and have five petals. The seeds are bean-shaped and start off green before turning a dark brown colour. They are about 1cm in length.[2]
Habitat
Commonly found in western North America, Lupinus vallicola natively grows in California, western Nevada, Oregon, and Washington, USA. It is also found in British Columbia, Canada.[3] Lupinus vallicola grows in dry, open areas such as grasslands.
Like most lupines, Lupius vallicola grows well in moderately fertile sandy soil that is well drained. The soil quality doesn't have to be high, as they can grow in poor soils due to their nitrogen-fixing roots.[4]
Uses
Lupinus Vallicola can act as a food source for livestock as well as a cover crop to improve soil quality. Additionally, it is also a popular house plant due to its colourful flowers.[1]
