Juan Jumalon (1965 or 1966 – November 5, 2023), also known as Johnnie Walker, was a radio broadcaster who was fatally shot live on air by an unidentified gunman in his radio booth at his home in Calamba, Misamis Occidental.
Background
Juan Jumalon was the second journalist to be killed in Mindanao since 1985,[1] and was the fourth journalist to be killed under the Bongbong Marcos administration since he took office in June 2022.[2] Before his death, Jumalon regularly broadcasted his radio station 94.7 Gold Mega Calamba FM through his Facebook streaming, which has around 2,400 followers.[3] According to the Committee to Protect Journalists the Philippines ranked eighth for the world's most dangerous places for journalists as of 2023.[4]
Killing
On November 5, 2023, Juan Jumalon also known as "Johnnie Walker" broadcasted his radio station 94.7 Gold Mega Calamba FM via Facebook livestream. At 5:30 a.m. (UTC+8), two men showed up outside the gate of the house on a pretense to have an "important announcement". After the staff agreed, one of them draw his gun and aimed the staffer while the other proceeds to enter the radio booth, where he shot the broadcaster twice the head.[5][6] He was 57.[1] The gunman stole the necklace as a trophy for killing the broadcaster before quickly fleeing with another accomplice, who was waiting outside the house.[6][2] The killing was caught on both Facebook livestream and CCTV camera; the original live broadcast of Jumalon's broadcast and his subsequent death had now deleted.[1][7] Jumalon was rushed to the hospital by the family members but was pronounced dead on arrival.[7] The family stated that they have no received any threats against Jumalon.[1]
Suspect
The gunman is yet to be identified. The police identified at least three suspects in the killing, including the two gunmen and a getaway driver. They are investigating whether it was work or personal-related.[5]
Reactions
President Bongbong Marcos condemned the killing of Jumalon and ordered the national police to track the perpetrator.[6] Marcos, Jr. added that "attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in our democracy."[5] The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) called the killing "brazen".[5] The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) expressed condolences to Jumalon's family, and condemned the attack on the journalists.[2]

The footage showed that the suspect immediately shot Jumalon in the head, grabbed his gold necklace and fled from the scene after making sure that the broadcaster was dead.
