Dan Near (born 1980) is a Canadian ice hockey executive, and incoming commissioner of the Western Hockey League (WHL), effective February 1st 2024. He previously worked as the Global Head of Creation Center for Adidas, and before that, as the Director of Marketing for the National Hockey League.

Early Life and Education

Near was born in Toronto, Canada to parents John and Nancy Near in 1980. He grew up in Markham, Ontario, and attended secondary school at St. Andrew's College, an all boys private school in Aurora, Ontario.

Near obtained a bachelor's degree in arts and sciences from Huron University College. While there he played tight end for the Western University Mustangs football team. He later obtained a Master's in business administration from Miami University in Ohio.

Career

National Hockey League

From 2005 to 2015, Near worked as a Marketing Executive for the National Hockey League. In the later years of that time, he was the Director of Marketing.

Adidas

From 2015 to 2023, Near worked for Adidas and was the Head of Hockey.

Western Hockey League

In 2024 Near was named Commissioner of the Western Hockey League. He replaced Ron Robison who held the position for over 20 years.

Awards and recognitions

In Jan 2023, Near was ranked number 52 on The Hockey News' list of People of Power and Influence in the world of hockey.

Personal Life

Near lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife Lori and their three children Charlie, Haley, and Taylor.
