Dan Near (born 1980) is a Canadian ice hockey executive, and incoming commissioner of the Western Hockey League (WHL), effective February 15th 2024[1][2]. He previously worked as the Global Head of Creation Center for Adidas, and before that, as the Director of Marketing for the National Hockey League.
Early Life and Education
Near was born in Toronto, Canada to parents John and Nancy Near in 1980. The oldest of three siblings, Near grew up in Markham, Ontario, and attended secondary school at St. Andrew's College, an all boys private school in Aurora, Ontario. He was active in athletics, playing competitive baseball, hockey, football, and lacrosse.
Near obtained a bachelor's degree in arts and sciences from Huron University College. While there he played tight end for the Western University Mustangs football team. He later obtained a Master's in business administration from Miami University in Ohio.
Career
National Hockey League
From 2005 to 2015, Near worked as a Marketing Executive for the National Hockey League. In the later years of that time, he was the Director of Marketing.
Adidas
Near worked at Adidas from 2015 to 2023, where he served as the Global Head of Adidas Hockey. While in this role, he spearheaded the popular "Reverse Retro" NHL jersey program[1].
Western Hockey League
On November 30th 2023, Near was announced as the incoming Commissioner of the Western Hockey League[3]. Near was chosen for the role of Commissioner following a search led by Vancouver Giants owner Ron Toigo. Near will officially assume the role of commissioner on February 15th 2024, replacing Ron Robison who held the position for over 20 years.
Awards and recognitions
In 2016, Near was named one of George Brown College's 5 to Watch winners for his work as Global Head of Adidas Hockey[4]. In Jan 2023, Near was ranked number 52 on The Hockey News' list of People of Power and Influence in the world of hockey[5].
Personal Life
Near lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife Lori and their three children Charlie, Haley, and Taylor.
