Can anyone provide information on whether a connection between I-680 and I-76 (turnpike) to the west has ever been planned?EagleFan (talk) 14:16, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It had been. The Mahoning County GIS website (http://gis.mahoningcountyoh.gov/HistMaps.htm) has a pair of PDF maps scanned from 1962 and 1965, among others, which depict the southern terminus of I-680 at the Market Street Extension. Most of these maps from 1965 and back do not show the interchange configurations, but it could be inferred that with the terminus being south of I-76, a partial interchange would not suffice. In the interest of avoiding the duplication of costs that has existed operating exits 232 and 234 for the past 40+ years, extending the new construction of I-680 to Market Street Extension and placing a full interchange on I-680 as a replacement for the original turnpike interchange at OH-7/Market Street would have been wiser. By 1966, the map truncates I-680 at I-76 and shows the partial interchange configuration that exists today. Keep in mind that I-680 south of US-224 had not been completed until around 1968, so these maps to this point in time are all entirely proposed routes and interchanges.
