"Red cent" is not synonymous with "large cent". The term seems to have been used to emphasize the low value, comparable to "not a darn cent" or "not a thin dime" or a "plugged nickel." On various dictionary sites, there is an origin date consistent with the above link and nothing supporting the idea that "red cent" referred to any specific coin. 152.44.150.22 (talk) 20:47, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
