Ian Luke Ousley is an American actor. He portrays Sokka in the Netflix fantasy series Avatar: The Last Airbender, which premiered in 2024.

Biography

Ousley was born and raised in College Station, Texas. He began practicing taekwondo at the age of 9 and competed nationally for five years, later earning a third-degree black belt in 2018.[1] He appeared in 3 episodes of 13 Reasons Why in 2019 and 2020.[2]

In August 2021, he was cast as Sokka in the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender.[3] During his casting announcement, he was described by his management as being a "mixed-race, Native American" and a "Cherokee tribe member."[1] However, the tribe in which he claims membership, the Southern Cherokee Nation of Kentucky, is not federally recognized; it is one of dozens of unrecognized tribes that have been decried as false by the three recognized Cherokee tribes (the Cherokee Nation, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians).[4]
