NicknameSully[1][2][3]
NationalityAmerican

Victor "Sully" Sullivan is a fictional character in the Uncharted franchise, most notably in the video game series, developed by Naughty Dog. He is Nathan Drake's mentor and father figure.[4] He appears in all mainline games: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, the spin-offs Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Uncharted: Fight for Fortune, the motion comic prequel series Uncharted: Eye of Indra, the comics series by DC Comics, and other related media.[5] A charismatic veteran treasure hunter and smuggler who accompanies the protagonist Nathan Drake in his adventures, serving as his guiding force, helping and watching him over in his globetrotting journeys.[6] He is played by Richard McGonagle who brings his voice and motion capture to life, also influencing Sully's personality.[7]

Uncharted series is a love letter to pulp novels, aiming to capture it's feeling.[8] Nonetheless Sullivan's Travels being a touchstone theme to it and naming Sully after it's protagonist, as well as naming Sully's boat in the first game.[9]

Though created to underline Nathan Drake's personality, Sully's charm don't go unnotice, being considered one of the most loved and charismatic of saga, deserving his own game.[10][1][11]

Character design

Richard McGonagle was chosen from among many for his experience, his sense of humor also helped him get into character, as did his interaction with Nolan North.[12][13] The actors felt very comfortable in the job interviews as they already knew each other from a previous work they did together.[14] Much of his personality and mannerisms were passed on to the character as well as his experience in the navy and his jargon, "goddammit".[15][12] Likewise his humor and jokes with sexual connotations.[7]

Sullivan was conceived as Nathan Drake's business partner.[16] He was to act not only as a partner, but as a mentor to the main character and to provide information about his criminal activities.[17]

Atributes

Personality

Sully is a former sailor who was disgraced from his position for illicit activities, and has since entered the world of crime as a thief of ancient relics and treasures.[18] In addition to being a thief, he is a businessman and owns a bar in which Nathan is co-owner.[16] Due to his training in the navy, he is very skilled in armed and unarmed combat, even at an advanced age, he proves to be quite capable.[19] Still from his time in the Navy, he knows how to navigate stars and fly planes, having his first plane in the series called "Hog Wild" in homage to a phase in Crash Bandicoot where the marsupial rides a wild boar.[17] Even though he is well capable, Sullivan often uses his age to his advantage by pretending to be a little senile so that his enemies will be more patient with him. He is also influential in the underworld, which often helps him get out of trouble or free Nathan from one,[18] and often even helps him get a job done.[19] Sullivan complains a lot about his age and says he's too old for that but he always ends up following Nate when he calls him,[20] and ironically his age doesn't stop him from investing in flirting and he's always telling his love stories when possible.[21] Victor often makes a comment with a strangely sexual connotation,[22][23] and Nathan often calls him a dirty old man and says that he often says things that sound perverted.[24] Victor is also somewhat greedy and is always looking to make money quickly and giving up if so risky.[25][26]
