Predecessor is a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game developed and published by Omeda Studios.[1], powered by Unreal Engine 5. The game started buy-to-play early access in November 2022, and the launched free-to-play access is scheduled to start on March 28th 2024[2][3]

Gameplay

Predecessor is a third-person multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game. In the game, you'll find symmetrical maps with bases positioned at opposite ends. The objective is to destroy the core situated in the opposing team's base. The map is separated by four main areas: Offlane, Jungle, Mid Lane, or Duo Lane[4]. Defensive towers guard each lane, automatically attacking any enemies within their range to protect the bases. Lanes are comprised of two towers and an inhibitor; destroying these structures enables a team to spawn stronger minions in that lane.

During a match, ten players are split into two teams, with each player taking command of a "Hero." Selecting a hero in Predecessor can sometimes feel like a gamble. Upon accepting the match invite, participants must designate their preferred role. With teammates able to view these selections, there's often an effort to form a well-rounded team. Yet, in cases where multiple players opt for the same role, the game intervenes, assigning one the desired position while the other receives an available one.[5] Each hero has their basic attack and possesses a set of four abilities composed of active attacks, maneuvers or passive buffs that help them or their teammates.

As a hero accumulates more gold by completing objectives, they gain the ability to purchase items from the shop, which can alter their abilities in diverse ways, such as enabling teleportation to new locations, invisibility, time manipulation, and more. These items also bolster a hero's strength, attack speed, health, and various other attributes, thereby enhancing their overall power.[6]

Development

Predecessor, is the inaugural title of Omeda Studios, founded in 2020 by Robbie Singh, Andrea Garella, and Steven Meilleur.[7] In 2021, Omeda Studios was awarded a grant from Epic Games as part of their Epic MegaGrants program. [8] That $2.2 million in initial funding is being used to make Predecessor, a game based on Epic Games' MOBA Paragon. A title that was canceled in 2018.[9]. To help facilitate that vision, Steve Superville, Paragon's creative director joined Omeda Studios as an advisor in June 2021.[10] Paid Early Access for the PC was accessible on the the Epic Games Store and Steam on December 1st 2021.[11] In 2022, Omeda Studios secured $20 million in funding to invest in Predecessor.[12] On December 5th, 2023, a Closed Beta was available to all North American and European players on PS4 and PS5.[13][14][15]
