The Vertex Companies, LLC (Vertex) was founded on February 12th, 1995 as Vertex Engineering Services, Inc. by William McConnell Jr., William McConnell Sr. (aka Mr. Mac), James E. O'Brien, and Jeffrey E. Picard. Vertex’s first office was opened in Weymouth, Massachusetts and it remains their headquarters today. In the first five years, Vertex also opened offices in New York City, Denver, and San Francisco. The Denver location, along with Manhattan and San Francisco were where Bill McConnell Jr. focused on construction and engineering work. Environmental services were offered nationwide, led by Jim O’Brien, and Jeff Picard. The company grew rapidly, and was ranked by Inc Magazine as the 53rd fastest growing company in the country in 2000.[1]
In 2001, Vertex was acquired by Tetra Tech, Inc., a large publicly traded AEC firm.[2]
From 2001 to 2005, as part of the family of Tetra Tech companies, Vertex continued to grow, providing surety and construction consulting, environmental claims consulting, air quality and industrial hygiene services, environmental consulting, and emergency response. During this time, Vertex worked on projects globally including Asia, Australia, Europe and Mexico. [3]
In 2005, the leadership of Vertex bought the company back from Tetra Tech.
In 2011, Vertex acquired McGlamery Engineering Group, LLC.
In 2013, Vertex became employee-owned (ESOP) and opened a subsidiary in Toronto Canada, VTX Consulting Services Inc.
In 2021, Vertex became a legal liability corporation (LLC) and private equity backed by Wind Point Partners of Chicago, Illinois.[4]
Other notable acquisitions that Vertex has completed include: Koch Environmental of Denver, Colorado in 2017[5]; Compass Project Management, LLC of Norwood, Massachusetts in 2019[6]; Xpera Group of San Diego, California in 2020[7]; Lockwood Kessler & Bartlett, Inc. of Syosset, New York in 2021[8]; Neptune Fire Protection Engineering of Jacksonville Beach, Florida in 2022[9]; Fulcrum, LLC of Scottsdale, Arizona in 2022[10]; and Breakwater Forensics LLC of Chicago, Illinois in 2023.[11]
