Screenpal (formerly known as Screencast-O-Matic) is a software company founded in 2006 by AJ Gregory. It develops screen recording, video editing, and hosting tools for communication and learning through visual media.[1][2][3][4]

History

Screenpal was founded in 2006 by AJ Gregory as Screencast-O-Matic, initially focusing on providing screen capture services. In 2023, it underwent a rebranding to become ScreenPal.[5][6]

Initially focusing on offering a free screen recording tool compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems, ScreenPal expanded its offerings to include apps for iOS in 2019 and for Android and Chromebook platforms in 2020.[7][8]

Screenpal launched a video editor in 2015. Initially offered with a free trial, the company opened up free video editing in 2021 and introduced free video recording and editing workflow in 2023.[5]

Screenpal began offering free video and image hosting in 2019, with premium hosting options for subscribers, leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS).[5]

In 2022, interactive video quizzing and analytics features were introduced. The same year, ScreenPal launched a video storyboard service called Stories, allowing planning out content in a storyboard and building videos directly from those storyboards.[9]

The company rebranded as ScreenPal in 2023.[7][10]

Operations

With headquarters in Seattle, WA, the company operates globally with customers in 190 countries worldwide and notable clients like NeilsonIQ, Autodesk, and Festo. The company also works with 100 universities in the United States and worldwide, including the University of Minnesota, Arizona State University, Arlington ISD, the University of Laval, the University of Helsinki, and Karolinska Institute.[11][12][10][8][2]
