Founded in 1911, St Austell Golf Course is an 18-hole parkland course located near St Austell, Cornwall. It is situated on a hill above the nearby mining village Polgooth and still containing the engine house and two open mineshafts of the Great Polgooth mine as features of the course. [1]
St Austell Golf Course features Mens, Ladies, Mixed, Seniors, and Junior sections, where rounds can be played on four main tee positions in in order or shortest to longest: golf access, red, yellow, and white competition.
History
Originally founded in 1911 as a few holes, it took until 1914 for the popularity of the course to allow for a full 18-hole course to be funded and built.
In 1925 James Braid (golfer) provided insight into how to extend the course and utilising previous mining wasteland south of the engine house, which now consist of the holes 13th through to the 16th, although the new design was finally implemented in 1936 in time for the silver anniversary. The next major extension in 1974 was provided by acquiring the land that now consists of the 8th to the 12th holes, increasing the length of the course to over 6000 yards [2].
In 2011 St Austell Golf Club celebrated its centenary year, where there was a possibility to play on one of the original course layouts with temporary greens being created in the previous positions.
