dav1d is an AV1 cross-platform decoder, open-source, and focused on speed and correctness.[1] It is developed by the VideoLAN and FFmpeg communities and sponsored by the Alliance for Open Media[2]. It is designed to be fast, small, cross-platform and correctly threaded[3].

dav1d is released under the BSD 2-clause "Simplified" License. While FFmpeg and VideoLAN projects tend towards copyleft licensing such as the GNU General Public License, a more permissive license was chosen to encourage adoption of AV1 and prevent the entrenchment of proprietary formats. This use of strategic licensing choices to attain freedom originates from the Vorbis project.[4]
