PAVE is an an aviation mnemonic to help pilots perceive and mitigate the risks of a flight during pre-flight planning by separating those risks into four categories. The categories are:

  • Pilot (or Personal). Potential risks in this category are covered in detail by the IMSAFE checklist.
  • Aircraft. This category covers the risks associated with the performance, equipment, and fuel of the aircraft to be flown.
  • EnVironment. This category covers the risks posed by the weather, terrain, and airspace along the route, as well as by the airport and time of day (or night) of the flight.
  • External Pressures. This category covers the risks when there are social, emotional, or other pressures to complete a flight at the expense of safety.
