2024 Mangaf building fire

In June 2024, at least 41 people were killed in a fire at a residential building in the Kuwaiti city of Mangaf.

Incident

A fire was reported at 06:00 local time (03:00 GMT) at a residential building. A "large number" of people in the building at the time of the fire. Flames engulfed the lower part of the building and thick black smoke billowed from the upper floors.[1] The deaths were a result of inhaling smoke from the fire.[2]

Cause

Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Yusuf al-Sabah said violations of building standards led to the tragedy. A senior police officer told state TV that that warnings were often issued about overcrowding in this type of accommodation.[1]

Aftermath

At least another 50 people were injured and taken to hospital. Indian embassy officials had visited the injured in hospital. Unconfirmed reports appeared in Indian media that at least 30 of the dead are from the sub-continent.[1][3]
