Characters

Plot

The series stars Loken as Jane Vasco, a DEA agent who is framed for drug crimes and forced to join a shadow agency of the United States government led by Andre McBride (Rob Stewart), in order to track down "Neuros" — mutants with superhuman neurological based powers, which encompass telekinesis and telepathy as well as other mental powers. Vasco and the others on McBride's team of agents work from an abandoned subway platform. During her first case with the new team, Vasco discovers that she too has superhuman abilities, namely that she is able to recover from injuries that would kill a normal human, as evident by her falling out a 40 story window and surviving the impact. However, despite being virtually indestructible, she still feels pain and her healing ability is not immediate, as she did not immediately sit up from the impact of the 40 story fall and only regained consciousness some hours later. She was still healing from the impact far later in the episode, barely able to walk back to the team's locale. Jane thus begins a journey to learn the source of her superhuman powers while also tracking down Neuros. These Neuros, while generally well-meaning, pose a threat to society because of their uncontrollable powers.

Production information

The Painkiller Jane TV series received the greenlight after the Painkiller Jane made-for-television movie starring Emmanuelle Vaugier aired on the SciFi Channel in December 2005 with positive results. The TV-movie, while adapted from the Painkiller Jane comic book series created by Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada, was drastically different in background and storyline from the original printed storyline. The Sci-Fi TV series is said to be far closer to the source material than the TV-movie.

Painkiller Jane is filmed at Insight Film Studios in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada[1] and various locations around the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. The remaining 4 episodes are to be filmed in Budapest, Hungary. [2]

Trivia

  • In the comics, Jane's last name is Vasko (with a "k"), but her name is spelled Vasco (with a "c") in the series.
  • According to IMDb, the series will attempt to remain more faithful to the comic book storyline than the made-for-TV film.
  • The Disturbed version of the song "Land of Confusion" is used in the promos for the show.
