The Neats have earned a place in the history of what is now called alternative rock. By supporting bands like R.E.M., they helped to create and support the underground college music scene in the 1980s. They existed in a vibrant community of artists and musicians that created a new genre of American popular music. This genre defined a sense of freedom independence that was a sign of the times during the repressive and conservative years under the Reagan administration.
