Over the years, Merian C. Cooper, co-director/co-producer of the film and creator of the King Kong character, had offered conflicting answers as to the origin of the story, claiming that he was inspired by a book detailing the newly discovered Komodo dragons of Komodo Island or witnessing an airplane flying over the Empire State Building. Film historian Ray Morton surmised that Cooper likely developed the story in phases, and noted Cooper's fascination with gorillas beginning at six years old after reading Paul Du Chaillu's Explorations and Adventures in Equatorial Africa.

Plot

Kenji "Ken" Sato, a professional but egotistical baseball player, returns to his native home in Japan, switching teams from the Los Angeles Dodgers to Japan's Giants; reporter Ami Wakita attributes his sudden career swap to rumored unfinished family business. In reality, Ken returns to Japan to reluctantly accept the mantle of Ultraman from his elderly father, Professor Sato. Ken leaves a press conference early to battle the monster Neronga in Tokyo.
