History Of The Sandusky Bay Conference

The Sandusky Bay Conference was organized on January 29, 1948 to go into operation the following fall. The charter members were: Elmore, Fremont St Joseph, Genoa, Gibsonburg, Danbury -Lakeside, Oak Harbor, and Port Clinton. Interscholastic competition was offered in Football and Boys Basketball, with Port Clinton winning the initial Football Championship and Tri-Champs were crowned in Boys Basketball of Port Clinton, Gibsonburg, and Fremont St Joseph.

In 1949, Clyde replaced Port Clinton and in 1950 Sandusky St Mary C.C. was admitted making it an eight team conference. In 1951, Boys Track became an official conference sport.

The conference experienced many changes between 1956 and 1960. Genoa withdrew in 1956, Danbury-Lakeside withdrew in 1957and in 1958, Elmore withdrew and Baseball was added as a fourth varsity sport while Carey was accepted as a member school. In 1959, Gibsonburg withdrew and Tiffin Calvert was accepted as a member school. In 1960, Lakota and Mohawk were admitted bringing the membership back to eight schools.

In 1962 and 1963 two switches kept the conference membership at eight as Gibsonburg returned replacing Mohawk in 1962 and Margaretta replaced Carey in 1963. Wrestling was added as a Conference sport in 1964.

In 1966, Tiffin Calvert was forced to withdraw from the conference because of a rule named two-for-one. Before this rule was removed from the Conference Constitution, a school was forced to withdraw if it had more than two boys for every one boy at the smallest conference school. This same year brought Huron and Fostoria St. Wendelin into membership for a total of nine schools.

The 1969-73 period was again a time of many changes. Boys sports added were Golf in 1969, and Boys Cross Country in 1970. The greatest change occurred in 1972 when Tiffin Calvert returned, Perkins was added and Oak Harbor, Gibsonburg, Lakota, and Fostoria St Wendelin withdrew leaving seven member schools. Boys Tennis was added in 1973. Under this new framework the Sandusky Register donated a Boys All Sport Championship Trophy. Girls competition began in 1973 with Huron winning the first varsity sport Volleyball Championship. In 1974, Girls Basketball competition began and in 1975 Girls Track was added. The year 1977 saw Girls Tennis added. With the expansion of Girls Athletics came the donation by Art Hendricks and Tag Wright of the Girls AIJ-Sports Championship Trophy first won by Clyde at the conclusion of the 1976-77 year.

On May 14, 1978, Port Clinton was accepted back as a member to begin conference play in 1980. Member schools were: Clyde, Fremont St Joseph, Huron, Margaretta, Perkins, Port Clinton, Sandusky St Mary C.C. , and Tiffin Calvert. With these eight teams competing, tight races, big crowds, and good tournament records allowed conference teams to participate in state competitions with great success. Girls sports added during this time were Cross Country in 1981 and Girls Softball in 1983.

The 1986-87 school year brought about two changes in membership which shaped the success of recent years. Fremont St. Joseph and Tiffin Calvert withdrew while Oak Harbor returned and Milan Edison joined the conference. In 1993, Boys and Girls Swimming became a conference sport and the 1997-98 year will see Soccer added. Under this format the reputation of the Sandusky Bay Conference has grown to represent tough no nonsense competition. Sandusky Bay Conference member schools continue to have great success in post season competitions and State Championships are not just dreams to the eight member schools of the Sandusky Bay Conference.
