Good Girl Gone Bad is the third album by R&B singer Rihanna which was released on June 4 2007 in most European countries and on June 5 2007 in the United States. The title was confirmed in Rihanna's official website.[1]

Background

Rihanna stated that the album has a different feel from her previous two, with more up-tempo and mid-tempo melodies.

"I think that's where I want to go on this one. You feel different every album, and (at) this stage I feel like I want to do a lot of uptempo (songs). I want to keep people dancing but still be soulful at the same time."[2]

Rihanna worked with Timbaland on three songs in the album. Justin Timberlake co-wrote and provides background vocals on "Rehab".[3]

In interviews, many have questioned the meaning and reasoning of the album title. During an interview on UK radio station Capital FM, Rihanna explains:

"Bad is not sleazy. Bad has it’s own term to every individual and in my case it just means I’ve gotten a little rebellious on the album, broken out of my shell and I'm taking risks... Michael Jackson "bad" kind of way.[4]

Other than the producers listed, Rihanna worked with her label mate Ne-Yo, who wrote her top-ten hit "Unfaithful", on new material as well as vocal techniques. Ne-Yo, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland are collaborators on the album.

During a later interview, she stated "How would you feel if someone came in to your home and began taking everything they wanted that looked cool, and gave you nothing in return. Pretty crazy, right? That's how I feel about the piracy of music."[5]

The United Kingdom edition of the album will be released with a digipack bonus CD full of remixes.[6]

Promotion

Rihanna has been making formal appearances around all of England. She has also performed three of her new songs in Preston. At a mini/promotional concert, she performed "Umbrella", "Shut Up and Drive" and "Breaking Dishes". Rihanna, most notably, performed "Umbrella at the MTV Movie Awards 2007. This performance was said to be her first live performance of "Umbrella" in the U.S..

Chart Performance

The first single from the album, "Umbrella", carried on with the tradition that all the other lead singles from Rihanna's previous albums developed. "Umbrella" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the issue date June 9, 2007. It is the second lead single of an album by Rihanna to reach number one in the U.S, after SOS from A Girl Like Me. Her first single, from her debut album Music of the Sun, "Pon de Replay", reached number 2 in the U.S. It was being held back from the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart by Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together".
