Philip "Phil" Brown (born May 30, 1959 in South Shields, England) is an English former footballer, and the current manager of Hull City.
As a player Brown was a dependable full back for many years - most of which was spent at Bolton Wanderers. He also played for Hartlepool and Halifax Town, playing alongside fellow Geordie Billy Ayre at both clubs and under him at the latter.[1] They would have linked up for a third time at Blackpool, but Ayre was sacked a month before Brown's July 1994 arrival at Bloomfield Road and was succeeded by Sam Allardyce. It was with Blackpool that Brown brought his playing career to a close in 1996.
Brown returned to Bolton and spent several years as assistant manager to Colin Todd and Sam Allardyce, briefly serving as caretaker-manager between the two reigns. He then had an unsuccessful spell as manager of Derby County, having succeeded George Burley in June 2005. He was sacked in January 2006.
Brown was appointed as first-team coach for Hull City on October 27, 2006 under Phil Parkinson, and took over as joint caretaker manager alongside Colin Murphy on December 4 2006 after Parkinson's sacking. Following three wins and a draw in the six matches he took charge of as caretaker, he was appointed as the permanent manager at the club on January 4 2007.
Brown is one of the featured managers in the internet viral sensation 'Pass It On', created to publicize the launch of 24 bespoke football designs by Mitre. One for each of the clubs in The Championship.
Brown posed nude in the April edition of Hull City's magazine, which he promised he would do if the fans could raise more than £100,000 in the Coca-Cola buy a player promotion, which they subsequently did.
