Template:Infobox Interstate/Intrastate Within the U.S. state of Washington, Interstate 90 spans 296.92 miles (477.8 km). In 2003, the Seattle terminus was re-engineered to better accommodate traffic from the two nearby sports stadiums. I-90 westbound still ends at its previous location next to Qwest Field, but eastbound begins about 1/4 mile (0.4 km) south at Edgar Martinez Dr. near the roof shed of Safeco Field at an interchange with 4th Avenue S.
I-90 incorporates two of the longest floating bridges in the world, the Lacey V. Murrow Memorial Bridge and the Homer M. Hadley Memorial Bridge, which cross Lake Washington from Seattle to Mercer Island, Washington. They are the second and fifth longest such bridges, respectively.
Sixty miles east of Bellevue I-90 traverses the Cascade Mountain Snoqualmie Pass, elevation 3,022 feet, the lowest east-west highway crossing in Washington state.[1]
Since 1980, I-90 from Seattle to Thorp, WA, was designated the Mountains To Sound Greenway to protect its outstanding scenic and cultural resources.[2]
Washington Law Defining Route
The Washington section of I-90 is defined at Washington Revised Code § 47-17-140.[1]
Route description
Prior to 2003, Interstate 90 used to end at an signalized intersection with 4th Avenue S. However, increasing traffic from Downtown Seattle, Colman Dock, Safeco Field, and Qwest Field forces city, county, and state officials to look for improvements to the area. The first stage of the improvements, the SR 519 South Seattle Intermodal Access Project[2], included the construction of a new on-ramp to Interstate 90 via a new interchange with 4th Avenue S. and Edgar Martinez Drive S. (formerly Atlantic Street). The second stage of improvements has yet to be constructed. From there, Interstate 90 travels east through the Central Area and into tunnels under the Mount Baker neighborhood. The tunnels end at the western shore of Lake Washington and onto floating bridges to Mercer Island and under several lids (tunnels) onto the East Channel Bridge into Bellevue and Issaquah. Between Seattle and Bellevue, there are reversible express lanes in the middle of I-90, operating in the westbound direction during the morning commute and eastbound during the evening commute. I-90 then enters the Cascade Mountain range through Snoqualmie Pass and out towards the Columbia Plateau, where I-90 the crosses the Columbia River on the Vantage Bridge. The freeway then heads slight north to climb the Plateau and head east, passing through Moses Lake. At Ritzville, I-90 forms a concurrency with US 395 towards Spokane, where US 2 also forms a concurrency and both US 395 and US 2 branch off from I-90 and Downtown Spokane. I-90 continues to head east through the suburbs of Spokane and into Idaho.
