The RM Classic Car Auction is an auction specializing in collector cars and collectible car-related nostalgia. It is situated in Monterey, California. The event is notable for being the only major automobile auction to be broadcast in high definition. It is currently occasionally broadcast on Discovery HD Theater.
Comparison to Barrett-Jackson
Though it is not as well-known as Barrett-Jackson, it does have its conveniences over Barrett-Jackson.
- The broadcasters speak about the automobile more often, probably due to their low bidding prices. In BJ, once an automobile reaches the multimillions, the broadcasters stop until the car has been sold. The car is shown more often, probably for the same reason.
- While BJ boasts of multimillion dollar hot rods, customs, muscle cars, etc, the RM Auction has mostly unmodified cars and a more varied variety. There are muscle cars, hot rods and customs. However, there are more exotics and stock American than at BJ.
- Barrett-Jackson is shown on Speed Channel, whereas the RM Auction is occasionally shown on Discovery HD Theater, making it the only classic car auction to be in HD.
- The RM Auction adds some class by having a British auctioneer. Also, the RM Auction's auctioneer speaks more slowly than the BJ Auction's auctioneer. The BJ Auction's auctioneer has been ridiculed to the point of parody.
