Zoe Carpenter is a fictional character on the long-running British Channel 4 television soap opera Hollyoaks.

She is played by actress Zoë Lister.

Zoe is a student at Hollyoaks Community College, she is studying Film Studies.

Character history

Zoe was a former girlfriend of Joe Spencer, the two dated in high school before Joe dumped her because of her weight. Zoe ended up going to HCC with Joe, and coincidentally, was one of the freshers taking Joe, Olivia and Jessica's dorm. After trying and failing to stop the new freshers from kicking them out of their rooms, Joe told Zoe he regretted dumping Zoe in high school.

Dog In The Pond Fire

Zoe, Kris, Joe and Olivia were present in The Dog when Sam Owen set it on fire. After Joe led Kris Fisher and Zoe out through the basement, he decided to go back and search for Olivia Johnson, which Zoe disagreed with because she didn't want Joe to die. Joe said he wasn't going to lose her again. These would be his last words to Zoe, as he died trying to save Olivia. Zoe and Kris tried to phone Joe, and followed his ringtone to a group of bodybags, leaving Zoe distraught.

Stalked

Zoe has lost weight since first dating Joe and is now an attractive confident girl, although is in some respects a 'tomboy'. She rejected an attempted kiss from Will Hackett, as she had not yet recovered from the death of Joe, to whom she found herself attracted again despite their colourful past. In an effort to regain her confidence with Joe no longer around to help, she has become a bit of an exhibitionist; first posing nude for Foz's art class (and being attacked by his jealous girlfriend Nancy Hayton for the privilege) and then experimenting with private nudity with cross-dressing flatmate Kris, who is one of the few people she now trusts since her room was broken into and bugged by her obsessive live-in 'stalker' Will.

Zoe had a brief relationship with Zak Ramsey; at first, a one night stand, before they confessed their feelings to each other. The relationship was sabotaged by Will, to whom she has inevitably become close but her 'activities' with Kris continue to make Will obsessively jealous. She was recently going to depart to New York for a year but when Will was seeing her off, he sabotaged her plans to go by stealing her passport, and when that failed as Zak suspected Will was up to something, he then trapped her hand in the taxi door and broke it, meaning she couldn't go to America.

Things could only get worse for Zoe. Will got even more controlling and decided to look for houses. He tried to push her into agreeing, but she told him he was being a prat. They later made up again but Will dumped her. Zoe decided to get cosy with Zak in her room, and Will got jealous as he was watching on the secret webcam. He then spiked Zoe's drink, putting the pill tub into her hand to make it look like she had tried to commit suicide. She later went into a coma but when she came home, Kris said she was "wanting attention", and Will was sympathetic with Zoe.

Zak soon suspected something was up when he walked in Will's room when he had the webcam up on his laptop, emerging a picture of Zoe. Zak rushed straight to Zoe, and they both agreed to steal Will's laptop. Zoe set the fire alarm off, got the laptop, only for it to get stolen by Sonny Valentine and Michaela McQueen because Michaela wanted the bag for her birthday. They then sold it onto Gilly, who gave it to Kris. Zak & Kris found the webcam files of Zoe and then started worrying for Zoe's safety.

Zoe was due to go to stay with her parents for a week or so, but she forgot her train tickets. As she want back for them, she walked into Will's room and saw him watching a webcam video of her crying on a television. She gasped, he locked her in his room, later dragging her onto the roof, where she was dangling off the edge. Zak saw and rushed up, called the police and eventually Will let her go. Zoe has been left traumatised by Will's actions, only for her feelings to be truly shattered when flatmate Zak tried to kiss her. She then left to stay for her parents. When asked when she'll be back, she replied, 'The way i am feeling right now.. never.'

Return and relationship with Darren

Zoe returned in late May 2007 only for her dad to turn up, giving Zak a lecture. Zak tried to persuade Zoe's Dad to let her stay, and he agreed.

Zoe has recently made friends with Darren Osborne, and appears to have a crush on him. After flirting with each other, Darren admitted to Jake that he likes Zoe, but Zak likes her more. After Zak finds out he's missed his chance, Darren is finding it hard to keep away from Zoe. He has recently been malipulating her, basically calling her a slag by putting Barbie Girl by Aqua on the radio in the Dog while she was present, branding her annoying and chatting up other girls in front of her, making Zoe jealous.

Darren then said to Zak that Zoe had no chance with him, but Zak later set them up on a date after Zoe admitted her true feelings. Darren and Zoe went on a date and they are now a couple.

Conflict with Jess

At the freshers ball, Zoe wore a gorgeous dress. Jess however was jealous as she had to make her own dress, due to not having any money. As Jess was talking to Zak she walked backwards into Darren, leading Darren to spill a bit of his drink on Zoes dress. Later Jess was going to sponge zoe's dress but as she went to do it Jess accidently ripped Zoes dress, which led Zoe to throw a glass of champagne over Jess. Jess reacted by punching Zoe and then the girls had a full blown fight on the dancefloor.

The following day Kris locked Zoe and Jess in a room together until they made up. This did not work, so he showed them a video of the girls fighting that Zak recorded. They admitted it was childish behaviour and made up, and the girls are now back to being friends.

Carbon Monoxide leak

At a housewarming party for John Paul, the faulty boiler makes it incredibly hot in the dorm. Before everyone fell unconscious, Zoe decided to stay at Darren's place as it seemed that the party had just become boring. Both Zoe and Darren rushed back to the halls when they heard the news.
