Wexford Youths Football Club are an Irish football club from Wexford who compete in the First Division of the FAI National League. The club is competing in its first season of football after being awarded an FAI First Division licence for the 2007 season.[1] The opportunity to join the Eircom League arose as Dublin City FC went bust before then end of the 2006 season, leaving an uneven number of clubs.[2] The 2007 season coincided with the takeover of the running of the league by the FAI all existing clubs had to apply for entry into what was effectively a new league.[3] Limerick FC was the only existing club refused a licence and it came to pass the Wexford Youths and Limerick 37 were admitted to the new league.[4]

History

Wexford Youths are the brainchild of construction magnate Mick Wallace, who has funded the construction of a state-of-the-art complex for the new team's home. Wallace manages the senior side as well as the under 21s, under 18s and under 16s. He is assisted in coaching the first team and under 21s by former Limerick FC manager Noel O'Connor. Pat Dolan, acts as an advisor to Mick Wallace and is filling the role while remaining on as Setanta Sports' anchorman for their live TV coverage of Irish domestic soccer.[5]

Wexford Youths FC applied for first division league licence in December 2006[6] Mick Wallace was confident that the club's application would be accepted stating that, 'We have a very good chance of playing Eircom League football next season and have the full support of the Wexford Junior League, which is great,'. [7] The club was officialy granted an Eircom League first division licence on the 6th of February 2007. [8]

Wexford Youths FC is a unique entity in Irish senior football. According to owner Wallace 'We are very much a community based team and will be run differently than any League of Ireland club has ever been run.'[9] The club has been formed by local people and has only taken on players from the Wexford area. It has been built on the success of under-age soccer teams from the county over the last decade. The club has the support of the Wexford and District League and it offers the opportunity for local players to advance to a higher level of football without leaving home. As it is put by the club on their official website ; "The framework, ethos, discipline, organisation and philosophy of Wexford Youths FC are vital. The club is building something completely new to the League of Ireland and we believe that we can show how it should be done.".[10]

The historic first match for Wexford Youths FC was away at Monaghan United, on the 9th of March 2007, and ended in a 2-2 draw. The scorer of Wexford Youths first ever goal in the Eircom First Division was Conor Sinnott.[11] The Youths then played their first home match at the newly developed Wexford Youths Football Complex, on the 18th March 2007. The game produced a 1-0 victory over Cobh Ramblers in front of a crowd of 2,130 people, Tom Elmes scoring in the 57th minute.[12] Wexford Youths first ever League Cup fixture saw them play Waterford United at the RSC, Waterford. This game was the first competitive derby game for Wexford Youths against one of their local rivals, and saw Wexford beaten 3-0.[13] The club's FAI Cup début arrived on the 15th of June 2007 with a trip to Jackman Park to face fellow league newcomers Limerick 37. A close fought game produced a 1-1 draw and sent the tie to a replay. .[14] The replay went the way of Limerick 37 on a 1-0 scoreline.[15]

On the 30th March 2007 Wexford Youths FC launched their official club website Wexford Youths FC. Following this, on Friday the 1st of June, the Wexford Youths FC Supporters Club was born, with a preliminary meeting held at the Wexford Youths Football Complex. [16] The supporters club also created a new supporters website Wexford Youths Supporters Club which has a message board for fans, and includes match reports, videos and photographs.

Colours and Badge

The club wears a black and white home strip in honour of Juventus. This was inspired by owner/manager Mick Wallace who is a season ticket holder at the Stadio delle Alpi and a huge fan of Italian football and culture.

The badge features the club motto 'Play the beautiful game' and the words 'Life's short, work hard, play hard' a motto that has been used by Wallace Construction for many years, having previously been placed on the kits of Cork City while Wallace sponsored that club. The two stars above the crest represent the two under 18 FAI inter league titles won by Wexford teams managed by Wallace.

Stadium

The building works for the new stadium and facilities, at Newcastle, Crossabeg, have been ongoing since 2003 and are expected to be completed around the end of 2008. Currently spectator facilities consist of a clubhouse with viewing area and a 1,000 seater temporary stand. The plans for a permanent stand to seat over 2,000 people are in place and construction is expected to begin in late 2007, once the eircom League season is finished. As of the first of October 2007 the temporary stand has been removed from the ground in anticipation of the commencement of work on the new stand.
