"Apologize" is a pop song performed by OneRepublic, that has enjoyed worldwide success, becoming One Republic's breakout hit. The original version of the song was released in 2006 and is featured in their 2007 album "Dreaming Out Loud". record producer Timbaland has since released a remixed version of the song, which has been successful in U.S. and New Zealand, having reached the number 1 position in both regions.
Background
The song "Apologize" was originally released by alternative rock group One Republic in 2006. The vocalist and writer of the song is Ryan Tedder, the lead singer of the band. According to the band's MySpace site, the song "explores the personal pain of multiple relationships gone awry and the necessity of moving on".
A version of the song was featured in the Timbaland album Shock Value. In Germany the song is the lead single to the movie soundtrack of "KeinOhrHasen". This version contain a slightly different beat, using a sampled drum machine. Timbaland is heard in the background, sampling vocals similar to Nelly Furtado's "Say It Right", but does not sing at all.
Music video
According to OneRepublic's MySpace blog, the video for "Apologize" with Timbaland was filmed on September 14, 2007 and hit television in early October.[1] The video had its premiere on UK music channel 'B4'.
The music video for "Apologize" was shot in a recording studio where it shows Ryan Tedder singing in the studio and the other band members playing instruments to the music. Tedder is also playing the piano while singing while Timbaland remixes the song while the camera circles One Republic.[2]
The European version features clips of the film "KeinOhrHasen", which stars Til Schweiger.
The video made its broadcast debut on VH1's Top 20 Countdown on October 27, 2007. It has been a popular vehicle for created music videos and social issue music videos.

Chart performance
The remix version of the song has become a worldwide success, making it OneRepublic's breakout hit, and first #1. In the United States' Billboard Pop 100, it has so far reached number one, like the previous single from Shock Value, "The Way I Are". It is the third consecutive single from Shock Value to top the Billboard Pop 100, and is already the album's most successful single on the Billboard Adult Top 40, so far reaching #17. It is also the second consecutive single from Shock Value to reach number one on U.S. Mainstream Top 40 radio. The song is also on its way to being a top 10 on the US Rhythmic Radio chart, which would make OneRepublic one of the first "Rock" bands in history to have a Rhythmic top 10 hit.
In the United Kingdom, even though it hadn't been officially released, it climbed to number 32 based on digital downloads alone, and has since risen to number three. In Australia the single debuted and so far has reached #10 on the ARIA Singles Chart, while the previous single "The Way I Are" was still at #1. The song has reached #1 on both the Canadian Hot 100 and New Zealand RIANZ Chart. It is the first #1 from Shock Value in New Zealand's RIANZ Chart and the fourth consecutive #1 in the Canadian Hot 100. In addition it is the first number one from Shock Value on the United World Chart.
On Billboard's official European Hot 100 chart the song "debuted" at #16, making it the highest debut chart position of any new act in the history of the chart. In the 2nd week on the European Hot 100 it has entered the top 10.
