Budgerigar Parakeets

A parakeet is a term for any one of a large number of unrelated small parrot species. It is mainly used instead of Conure for small long-tailed members of the Arini in the Americas, and in Australia colloquially for many species. For the small bird often sold in pet stores, see budgerigar.

The term is descriptive and used for small, long-tailed parrots but does not imply an actual relationship between the different parakeets. Not all parakeets have long tails. An older orthography still sometimes encountered is paroquet.

Bathing

There is no specific way to bathe a parakeet, It really depends on what the bird likes. I may like having a bowl of water set in it's cage so that it can bathe it's self, getting sprayed by a spray bottle, or being bathed by a hand-held shower.

Getting a Parakeet

Getting a parakeet is a short easy process ,but it must be well thought through. It is a good idea to look at parakeets in a pet store before making your desision. You should observe the personality of the bird first, and then deside if it is the bird for you. You should get a spacious cage for your parakeet with plenty of room for a few toys, feeders, and waterers. Feeders and waterers reduce the chance of spills and you only have to fill them twice a week!

Care and Keeping

Caring for a parakeet is not a hard task. You should try to set two hours apart from the rest of the day to play with your parakeet so that it can get used to you. If you are gentle and patient you can teach it to talk. Example: If you say food every time you feed it, it may begin saying food whenever it is hungry. You should get it a few toys that it can excersize on like a ladder. If you are gentle with them you can sometimes teach them to fly around the room. If you do this it is a good idea to keep all doors and windows shut tight!
