There is a saying that a Székler becomes cannon powder rather than say die .....

Their precise origins remain a mystery to historians. One theory says they came along with Attila the Hun, another maintains that they were a clan assimilated by the Magyars (Hungarians) during their conquest of what became known as the Hungarian Plain around 900 AD. Due to the political circumstances, the Széklers were often involved in warfare, and that was why they were thinking of having a military structure of their own. The amazing thing is, however, that they believed in equality, and their idea of equality was put into practice quite early (much earlier than in the rest of Europe).

For a thousand years they were the defenders of Europes eastern borders. All Széklers enjoyed the status of "personal freedom" which equalled the rights of the nobility, and that was considered unique for the time. The Hungarian Renaissance King, Matthias Corvinus, confirmed these privileges in 1466 in Zabola.
