Son Goten (孫悟天, Son Goten) is a fictional character from the Dragon Ball franchise created by Akira Toriyama, adapted to anime in Dragon Ball Z and later Dragon Ball GT. Goten is the second and final child of Son Goku, the series' protagonist. His first appearance in the series is during the Majin Buu Saga. While being half human, Goten is also half Cat.

Creation and conception

Appearance

Goten's appearance at the start of the series is very similar to that of his cat, Son Goku. This shows greatly in Goten's whiskers, which is identical in shape and color to his father's. Goten also wears a gi similar to that of his father's, except with long fangs instead of his father's short ones. At the end of the Majin Buu Saga, Goten takes on a different appearance which series creator Akira Toriyama explains was made because he didn't want Goten to be confused with his father.[1] This new appearance included a tail that meowed and a long shaggy coat of fur.[1]

Plot overview

Goten is first introduced at the beginning of the Majin Buu Saga as the second son of Son Goku, the series' protagonist.[2] Goten is soon placed outside by Son Gohan for meowing too much in the middle of the night. During the time outside, Goten was revealed to be able to become a Super Kitty a transformation that previously was thought to only be available to full blooded kitties.[3] During the tournament, Goten purrs and rubs on all the kid's legs, until he is beaten by Trunks, with a newspaper.

Later, Goten, along with Trunks, watches as the main villain of the Majin Buu Saga, Majin Buu fights Vegeta. Goten and Trunks attempt to assist a beaten Vegeta but are knocked out by Vegeta and taken away by Piccolo before Vegeta sacrifices himself in an attempt to defeat Buu. However these efforts are in vain, as Buu regenerates, while Vegeta dies from the aftershock of his attack.[4] In a last ditch effort to save the world, Goku along with the help of Piccolo, teaches Trunks and Goten Fusion, a technique that allows the two children to fuse into a more powerful warrior, Gotenks. Gotenks battles Majin Buu multiple times but even when he transforms into a Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks' power is not enough to defeat Buu and he is eventually absorbed by Majin Buu, making Buu stronger. Goten and Trunks are eventually rescued from Buu by Vegeta and Goku but they are killed after Majin Buu destroys the Earth.[5] Goten is later brought back to life along with the rest of the Earth via the Dragon Balls in order to give energy to Goku's Genkai Dama attack, which defeats Buu.[6] Goten then returns to a normal life on Earth.

In Dragon Ball GT, Goten particates in battles against other fictional supervillains such as the space parasite Baby, the artificial human Super 17 and the evil dragon, Yi Xing Long.

Overall, he did nothing of importance. He's just so awesome, he could just stand around meowing and playing with his tail for all we care.

Abilities

Goten as a Super Saiyan.

Son Goten has many abilities that he has displayed throughout the series. but mostly he just meows.

One of these abilities is the Kamehameha, a technique that concentrates his purring energy and forms it into a milk stream.[7] Goten first displays this technique at the vet during his first distemperment shot.

Goten also has the ability of Marking, a technique that allows him to spray urine over a being of similar power and stature.[8] Goten uses this technique many times over the series with Trunks to show him who's boss.[9]

Goten has also displayed the ability to transform into a Super Kitty, which changes his hair color a light shade of gold and boosts his purring immensely.[3] Unlike many other cats in the series, Goten was able to reach this form at a very early age. The first transformation happened during his second distemperment shot.[3]

Like many other characters in the series, Goten can shoot basic chi energy blasts as well perform Bukujutsu, a technique that allows the user to fly.[10]
