The ModBook is an after-market modification that converts an Apple MacBook into a slate style Tablet PC [1] The ModBook was introduced in the 2007 Macworld Conference & Expo and drew one of the biggest crowds, second only to the iPhone. It won a Best in Show award at that same conference.[2] The ModBook is currently the only tablet-form Mac on the market.

Conversion process

The top segments of the MacBook are removed, which include the keyboard, LCD screen and iSight camera. A glass screen cover, a new LCD screen, a sensor board, the original iSight camera and a chrome-plated magnesium top shell are then installed.

Comparison

There are two models available, called Fast and Fastest because the primary difference is the speed of the CPU (2 GHz Core 2 Duo vs 2.2 GHz like the standard MacBook). Other hardware options, such as the hard drive, can be customized to make a "Fast" match a "Fastest" configuration. Both models retain the same hardware as the MacBook for memory, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, video card, optical drive, and iSight. The ModBook has the same screen size as MacBook, but the ModBook uses a different screen. The ModBook can use Apple's Inkwell software to recognize handwriting.

The ModBook includes a WAAS GPS device standard on both models. The screen used is completely different from the MacBook, and incorporates Penabled digitizing technology from Wacom. The screen is called "AnyView" and is strengthened with a technology called "ForceGlass". This layer is the outermost, sitting on top of the LCD screen, which is on top of the pen sensor layer.

Because the conversion process voids the warranty from Apple, the ModBook cannot be used with programs like AppleCare. Instead, Axiotron provides their own one-year or three-year warranty.

Delays

The ModBook which has been slated for March 2007 during the MacWorld exhibition had been delayed indefinitely due to component shortage by Axiotron. However, According to the Axiotron order web site, the ModBook is now available in the United States, and soon Canada, followed by selected regions and countries worldwide in February 2008. [3].
