Cardinal Gibbons High School is a private Roman Catholic secondary school located in Raleigh, North Carolina. It is the only Diocesan Catholic high school in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh
Overview
Originally founded in 1909, the school has had a series of administrations including three religious orders, most recently the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn. Since the Brothers departed two years ago, Cardinal Gibbons has been run by layman Jason D. Curtis who runs the school to reflect its mission: to form men and women of faith, service, and leadership in church and community.
Athletics
Cardinal Gibbons has a history of excellence in athletics. In the two years since its membership in the 2A North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Conference Cardinal Gibbons has maintained that tradition of excellence. In the 2006-2007 school year Cardinal Gibbons captured eight state championship titles as well as the NC Wachovia Cup, its sixth since 2001. Those state championship titles included boys soccer, cheerleading, boys cross country, and girls swimming. This string of state championships led Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker to proclaim December 4, 2007, Cardinal Gibbons Champions Day. Mike Sheehan is the new head football coach. Cardinal Gibbons also possesses a state-of-the-art Physical Fitness Center, thanks to the generosity of an alumnus and his family.
