New York State Route 174 is a north-south New York State Route located within Onondaga County. Its northern terminus is located at a junction with Route 5 in the village of Camillus. The southern terminus is located at a junction with Route 41 in the hamlet of Borodino, within the town of Spafford. Route 174 is 16.70 miles (26.88 kilometres) long.
Route description
Route 174 begins at an intersection with New York State Route 41 and County Route 263 in Borodino.[3] The road proceeds north, intersecting with Elbert Road (County Route 131), where 174 turns east. The highway then heads north at the turn near Otisco Lake. It follows the shoreline of the lake and intersects at the northern end with County Route 124. Afterwards, Route 174 passes through Marietta, intersecting with County Route 21 before entering the town of Skaneateles soon afterwards.[3]
In Skaneateles, Route 174 becomes concurrent with U.S. Route 20.[4] The concurrency is short-lived, as Route 174 turns to the north along Sevier Road. It proceeds north, intersecting with Onondaga CR 177 in Skaneateles. Near the Skaneateles/Marcellus town border, New York State Route 175 interchanges along with County Route 73, whereupon Routes 174 and 175 become concurrent for less than two miles. The two roads go into Marcellus and split in different directions. Route 174 turns along the West Seneca Turnpike as it heads through downtown Marcellus.[4]
The at-grade road turns north on North Street and heads out of Marcellus,[5] twisting and turning its way northward, passing through Marcellus Falls, and intersecting several county routes in Onondaga County. It then intersects with Reference Route 931F in Bennetts Corners, which is a connector road to New York State Route 321. Route 174 heads to the northeast and makes a sharp turn onto West Genesee Street, where it comes to an end at a jughandle for New York State Route 5 just west of Camillus.[5]
History
The segment of NY 174 from Forward Road to Camillus was originally part of Route 26, which was designated from Ithaca to Syracuse in 1924.[6][7] The "174" designation was added to the road from Borodino to Camillus in the 1930 renumbering.[2] Route 174 has been extended west along former Route 5 to the new bypass of Camillus,[8] and has been relocated onto a southeastern bypass that carries Route 175 around Marcellus, still passing through downtown but using several blocks of the historic Seneca Turnpike[9][10] between the old and new alignments.[11][12]
From the 1930s to the 1960s,[13][citation needed] Route 174 overlapped the now-defunct Route 20N from U.S. Route 20 north to Marcellus, where Route 20N continued east on Route 175.[11][14] Another overlap was present with Route 321 north of Forward Road, as Route 321 had replaced Route 26 into Camillus to Route 5;[15] Route 321 has since been relocated to the west on a county road,[8] and Forward Road is now Route 931F.[16]
