Letcherwater is the username for Sam Adams, a former newspaper reporter and editor, author, historian, and community activist.

I am a native of eastern Kentucky and have spent most of my life here, but I've lived all over the state. I am currently serving as a VISTA with The Head of Three Rivers Project, which gets its name from the fact that three rivers have headwaters in Letcher County. The North Fork of the Kentucky and Elkhorn Creek of the Big Sandy begin on the northwestern slope of Pine Mountain. The Poor Fork of the Cumberland begins on the southeastern slope.

The county is home to some of the cleanest streams in Kentucky, and also some of the dirtiest. The Head of Three Rivers Project is dedicated to cleaning up acid mine drainage and other stream pollution in ways that provide opportunities for clean economic development.
