Pitre is a surname given to Acadian settlers in the Canadian provinces of Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland & Labrador, many of whom later settled in Louisiana. The founder of the Acadien family was one Jean(Jehan) Pitre Dit-Beneque b: Abt. 1636 "d'origine flamande"; d: Abt. 1689 Port Royal, Acadia Pitre said to be of Flemish descent. It's pronunciation can vary from (pit) to (peetree) to (pete). It is believed approximately 9,000 people share this surname. Famous Pitres include Cajun music pioneer Austin Pitre and hall of fame ice hockey player Didier Pitre, filmmaker Glen Pitre, and his younger brother Louisiana State Representative Loulan Pitre, Jr.
