PARANGAL: A TRIBUTE TO CHRIST OUR SAVIOUR AT THE SHANG
Sculptor Daniel dela Cruz Pays Tribute to The Risen Christ
-
Sculptor Daniel dela Cruz
MANILA, Philippines. Talented product designer-turned-sculptor Daniel dela Cruz, mounts his 2nd solo exhibit titled “Parangal: A Tribute to Christ Our Savior,” at the 3rd Level Lobby (Figaro Area) of the Shangri-La Plaza in Mandaluyong City. The exhibit features 26 metal artworks - each piece unique and one-of-a-kind painstakingly hand-carved and handcrafted from brass, copper and lead using his personally-developed techniques to create details and forms totally fresh in the genre. The exhibit runs until April 6, 2008.
Dela Cruz carved a niche in the art scene last year with the phenomenal success of his first-solo exhibit dubbed “Kandungan: A Tribute to Women of Our Lives” at the ArtistSpace of the Ayala Museum in Makati City. This was followed by his various participation in major exhibitions such as “Forces of Form: The 3rd Annual Review of Philippine Contemporary Sculpture” held at the Art Center of SM-Megamall last October 2007.
“Parangal” depicts the living Christ, a victorious and glorious Redeemer. His pieces portray not the passion and sufferings Christ had to undergo to deliver us from our sins but His transcendence from the cross and joyous ascension to heaven. It portrays Jesus Christ as the Hope in Our Lives, the Tree of Eternal Life, and A Living Spirit constantly by our side and guiding our way. The 26-piece exhibit shows Christ figures in striking, slender and elegant forms accentuated with exquisite renditions of Christ’s hands and fingers - a hallmark of all the dela Cruz’ works which maximizes the expressiveness of the art pieces. The elongated forms a departure from his first solo exhibit showcasing generously proportioned figures of women. With his women, he sought to portray inner beauty and strength through the volume of their bodies, while with “Parangal” the more elongated forms of Christ depict His transcendent spirituality.
“Jesus is beyond his body, beyond this world… a part of the Heaven, His home, where He is eagerly awaiting to have us by his side.” Dela Cruz stated.
“In a world where we are surrounded by pain, suffering and discouragement, Jesus leads the way and shows us that we too can transcend beyond this world…” dela Cruz enthused. “and join Him in a victorious ascent to heaven by living by His Word and example.” he concluded.
“Transcendence,” and “Ascension,” vividly exemplifies the glorious rising of Christ to heaven. The Father, The Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit is magnificently expressed in “Trinity.” The collection also includes various unique depictions of Christ, which show Him as more than the figure we see nailed to the cross.
Parangal is presented by the La Salle Green Hills (L.S.G.H.) Batch ’84 Foundation in connection with the year-long Golden Anniversary celebration of L.S.G.H. and the Silver Jubilee celebration of Batch ‘84 in 2009. Proceeds of the event goes to The One La Salle Fund. For more details, call Cora at (632) 531.0392 / (63) 918.572.9050.
