Miracle Landing is an Emmy-winning 1990 made-for-TV movie based on a harrowing in-flight accident aboard Flight 243 that occured in April 1988. The Boeing 737-200 was flying from Hilo, Hawaii to Honolulu, Hawaii, when it experienced rapid decompression when a section of the fuselage was torn away. With one person swept to their death and dozens injured, the aircraft was able to make a successful yet difficult emergency landing at Kahului Airport, on Maui. The film aired on the US television network, CBS in early 1990 and since been shown on networks throughout the world in syndication.

Plot

While the film focuses on the true events aboard Aloha 243, several subplots about characters were introduced.

  • Throughout the film First Officer Madeleine "Mimi" Tompkins begins the film with news that she is has invited to train to be a captain with Paradise Airlines. She had been the first female pilot in Paradise Airlines, hired in 1979. She also has several flashbacks to her days a training pilot during the crew's struggle to land the plane.
  • Captain Robert "Bob" Schornstheimer is the captain aboard the flight and in his off time is seen as a family man and sailor aboard his private boat. He also has several flashbacks but to his days as an Air Force pilot.
  • Michelle Honda is a young mother who enjoys painting in her off time. She is then forced with the responsibility and the duties of keeping the passengers calm after C.B. is tragically killed in the accident.
  • C.B. Lansing
  • Jeff and Cindy Thomas are a couple returning from a romantic honeymoon in Waipi'o Valley. Cindy is also a flight attendant who notices the lack of passengers observing the safety demonstrations, specifically her husband.
  • Gail and David Kornberg are a mother and her son, who are enjoying a family vacation in Hawaii. David's manners win the affection of C.B. who eventually gives the boy extra cookies during the in-flight beverage service. David is also the first to notice the crack in the fuselage and ultimately tells C.B. moments before the decompression and accident.
  • "Tui" is a dancer at the Liki-Liki who requests a belt-extender from Michelle earlier in the film.
  • Roy Wesler is a gate agent for Pan Oceanic who is non-reving aboard this flight who hits on Michelle during boarding.
  • George and Dorothy Hendricks are an elderly couple who are the first passengers on board and among those seated in the accident zone which proves to be a harrowing experience
