TN Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Feb 26 2008 laid the foundation stone for a drinking water project at Hogenakal, kollegal taluk, dharmapuri district, tamilnadu to be constructed with an aid of Rs.11.4 billion from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).The Hogenakal Water Supply and Fluorosis Mitigation Project is expected to cover 6,755 households in three municipal areas, 17 panchayats and 18 town panchayats, benefiting about three million people [1]. Of the total cost of Rs.13.3 billion, the Tamil Nadu government will bear the rest of the cost[2].

Hogenakal

It is situated in dharmapuri district, Tamilnadu. Approach road through tamilnadu side is present upto the falls. Situated about 30 kms from mettur reservoir. It is a popular tourist spot & cinema shooting locale.

Cauvery (Kaveri)

At Sivasamudram, the river dips by about 97m. in a series of falls and rapids and, after flowing through a very narrow gorge, continues its East-ward journey and forms the boundary between the States of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for a distance of about 64km. Below Sivasamudram, it receives the Shimsha, and then Arkavathy, just before entering the territory of Tamil Nadu. In Tamil Nadu, the river Cauvery continues to flow East-wards upto Hogenakal Falls and takes a Southerly course and enters the Mettur reservoir. It leaves the Eastern Ghats below Mettur and is joined by Bhavani, about 45 km. downstream.

karnataka opposition to Hogenakal Project

Although bangalore's drinking water was also sought to be sourced from cauvery, some factions within Karnataka (which didnt oppose the bangalore scheme) dont want the people of dharmapuri district (tamilnadu) from using the dharmapuri's cauvery river water for drinking purposes. The water utilised for this project will be from tamilnadu's share of cauvery water, thereby placing no extra demand on karnataka. The scheme has a no objection certificate from the central govt [3] & a similar pact with the govt. of karnataka in 1998 [4], whose proceedings have been recorded.
