Derrick Martell Rose (born October 4 1988) is a freshman basketball player for the Memphis Tigers.
Playing career
High school
At Simeon Career Academy, Rose led his team to two straight State Championships. Simeon became the first Chicago Public League team to win back to back titles. During his senior year he led Simeon past then #1 ranked Oak Hill Academy, 78-75 on national TV. That loss turned out to be Oak Hill's sole loss on the season. In that game, Rose had 28 points, 9 assists, and 8 rebounds. He played in the Jordan Brand game and the McDonald's All-American game. Rose also played for Team USA in the Nike Hoop Summit. Rose's career record in high school was 120-12, which is over 90%. Finally, he was widely considered the top point guard prospect of the 2007 high school class.
College
He currently plays for the University of Memphis Tigers under coach John Calipari. As a freshman he led his #1 seeded Tigers to the 2008 NCAA Men's Final Four, and to the NCAA Championship Game. However, they lost to the University of Kansas in overtime, 75-68.
Personal
Rose attended Beasley Academic Center for elementary school, and Simeon Career Academy in Chicago, Illinois for high school. His AAU team was the Mean Street Express.
Rose goes by the nickname "Pooh". This name originated from when Rose's grandmother referred to him as such when he was an infant, referencing the fact that he looked like Winnie-the-Pooh. Rose has a tattoo on his left biceps depicting a wizard holding a staff in one hand, a basketball in the other. The entire image is framed by the words "The Great Poohdini".
Playing style
Rose's combination of size, athleticism and passing ability has drawn comparisons to NBA superstars such as Dwyane Wade and Jason Kidd.
