Sekolah Menengah Seg Hwa (also known as Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Seg Hwa) is a public high school situated at Jalan Tahang Rimau, District of Segamat (昔加末), State of Johore, Malaysia. The school is well known for it's picturesque and breathe taking ambiance. Among the features are the clock tower, gigantic stone steps, numerous Chinese pavilion and water fountain.

The clock tower, "Xi Yin Lou 惜阴楼", was a gift from the school 11th alumni. It was built in 1962 with an engraving of a famous Chinese Poetry by 陶渊明 from Jin Dynasty:

"盛年不重来,一日难再晨; 及时当勉励,岁月不待人。"

History

In the year of 1918, a group of local merchants with cooperation of the locals chiness established a primary school, namely Chong Cheng Primary School (now known as Sekolan Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan Seg Hwa), along Jalan Mentol. With the finance contributions from the local chinese merchants, a block of building with wight classroom was constructed in year 1936.

After the second world war, the school later renamed Hwa Chiao Primary and Secondary School (Sekolah Menengah Rendah Hwa Chiao)with the establishment of the secondary school.

Due to the increasing of the students population, a new block of with 10 classrooms was constructed in year 1950. However, it did not solve the shortage of classroom. The Board of Governors of the school then with the assistance of the Association of Rubber Merchants set up a building committee in 1954 to look for the alternative site for the secondary school. The then local assemblyman, YB Tuan Haji Noor successfully applied for a piece of land approximately 10 acres near Bukit Hampar.

A new building of 16 classrooms was constructed and the secondary school was officially separated from Hwa Chiao Primary and Secondary School and was named as Sekolah Menengah Hwa Chiao, Bukit Hampar(Tahang Limau). The first sessions was started in year 1957.

Change of Name

Up till the year of 1957, the school was running with a private funding. With the independence of Federation of Malaya and in line of the government policy, the Board of Governors agreeing to accept the government funding and assistant, the school was renamed Hwa Chiao National Type Secondary School (Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Hwa Chiao) with with the appointment of Mr Tseng Hsi Kuei as principal. From 1959, the school was running in two sessions per day i.e. moring for upper secondary and afternoon for lower secondary.

In 1963, due to the facts that Chinese in Federation of Malaya was granted citizenship and the name "Hwa Chiao" was no longer appropriate as it carries the meaning of "chinese abroad". The school was renamed "Seg Hwa National Type Secondary School" (Sekolah Menengah Jenis kebangsaan Seg Hwa) "Seg Hwa" means the Chiness of Segamat.

Stadium Festing

In yar 1959, Mr Tseng Hsi Kuei requested the assistance of his collegue during Second World War, General Festing to clear approximately 5 acres of land to converted into a stadium and as an appreciation, the stadium was named after Gerneral Festing as Stadium Festing.

Silver Jubliee

The shcool celebrated silver jubliee in the year 1982 with funfair and exhibitions. The then Deputy Minister of Education YB Tan Tiong Hong was invited to officially openning of the new school three storey science labs. A fund rising dinner was also organised at that night.

Golden Jubliee

The school celebrated its golden jubliee on 21st and 22nd July 2001 officiated by the then Deputy Education Minister, Dato' Hon Choon Kim, with a dinner attended by approximately 3000 guests.
