Gemma Osbourne is a fictional police officer in the long running ITV drama The Bill. She was played by Jane Danson from 2002 to 2003.
Biography
Gemma began her policing career with the Greater Manchester Constabulary before transferring to the Metropolitan Police in London. She had obvious talent as a driver having excelled in her position with Traffic Division but is transferred to Sun Hill as a result of the Commissioner's initiative to place traffic officers on the front line combating street crime.[1]
Although her talent with traffic is certainly valuable at Sun Hill, she lacks experience on the street and does not last very long. Inspector Gina Gold questions her suitability for the job following a conscience battle, where she fails to report a refugee and her daughter.[1]
She leaves the force, awaiting the result of medical tests after a beating she received just weeks earlier.
Sexuality
Gemma was one of the few lesbian and gay characters to feature on the show. Shortly before her departure from the series, she became convinced that Inspector Gold was "in the closet" and made an angry accusation to that effect following the beating mentioned above.
