Battle of Tehumardi
The Battle of Tehumardi was an event where forcibly conscripted local Estonians in both the Soviet 249th Rifle Division, and Grenadier Regiment 67 of the German 23rd Infantry Division fought a pitched night battle[1] on 8 October 1944 during World War II. The battle took place on the Sõrve peninsula of Saaremaa island; the action was a part of the Moonzund Landing Operation, an attack by the Red Army on German forces occupying the Moonsund archipelago.
Losses included the commander of the Red Army's 307th Anti-Tank Battalion, Major Vladimir Miller. After the war the Soviets built a memorial at the site. Approximately 200 Red Army soldiers are buried near the memorial: it is unclear where the Wehrmacht soldiers are buried.
